One of the biggest misconceptions in the fitness industry is that fat loss begins with an exercise intervention. Despite exercise being an essential component of overall metabolic health, your food choices and nutritional patterns are the biggest challenges you face in fat loss. Both scientific evidence and anecdotal results have shown that exercise, quite frankly, is pretty useless for fat loss. Eric Ravussin, a professor at Pennington Biomedical Research Center notes, “It’s especially useless because people often end up consuming more calories when they exercise.” Furthermore, the New York Times states:
How exercise affects body weight is one of the more intriguing and vexing issues in physiology. Exercise burns calories, no one doubts that, and so it should, in theory, produce weight loss, a fact that has prompted countless people to undertake exercise programs to shed pounds. Without significantly changing their diets, few succeed.
So if altering food habits are the foundation of fat loss, where do we begin? By making nutrient dense foods, particularly protein, the crux of our diet.
In addition to the fat-loss benefits of protein-based diets, there are other myriad benefits such as improved total cholesterol, blood lipids, VLDL levels, and enhanced HDL (good) cholesterol levels. One of the small, albeit important, contributors of metabolic rate is the thermic effect of food. Protein has the highest thermic effect of food which means that 20% of the calories we consume from protein foods are burned off in the process of digestion (Miyaki, The Samurai Diet). Additionally, protein-based diets also enhance satiety which keeps us feeling fuller for longer periods of time to effectively reduce overall food and caloric intake.
Lean protein is the foundation of your fat loss diet.
This past week, I had the pleasure of trying out SunWarrior’s protein powder and Ormus Supergreens and applaud SunWarrior for creating products that are Organic, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free, Hypo-Allergenic, and Non-GMO.
Sun Warrior Protein: Classic and Warrior Blend
Sun Warrior protein comes two varieties, the Classic and Warrior Blend. The Classic blend comes out to 80 calories with 16 grams of protein, 0 grams of fat, and 2 grams of net carbohydrates. It is made from raw and sprouted whole grain brown ice protein. In spite of lacking a complete amino acid profile, in my opinion, it is the more tasty of the two variations. The Warrior blend comes out to 100 calories, 19 grams of protein, 2 grams of fat, and 0 grams of net carbohydrates. This variation of protein powder has a complete amino acid profile (contains both essential and nonessential amino acids) and therefore a higher protein content, although I was not a fan of its “earthy” taste.

Sunwarrior uses an old-world, low temperature, enzymatic process that includes the whole grain of brown rice, including the germ, endosperm, and bran. This unique process captures a protein that's silky smooth and mixes well. Most important, it tastes great!
Sun Warrior Ormus Greens
Besides protein powder, Sun Warrior has also created Ormus Supergreens which is a nutrient dense greens powder made of alfalfa, barley grass, wheat grass, spinach, oat grass, parsley, moringa, and ginger. One serving (1 tablespoon) of Ormus Supergreens comes to a total of 15 calories with 0 grams of fat, 1 gram of net carbohydrate, and 1 gram of protein, plus an abundance of trace minerals.
Green veggies are also essential for health and for fat loss, and Ormus Supergreens is an excellent way to help you get the recommended daily requirement of veggies. Nate Miyaki, author of The Samurai Diet states, “Factoring in the low calorie load, their high fiber content, and the thermic effect of food, non-starchy vegetables are essentially a calorie-free food. Their high volume and effect on satiety will help prevent the over-eating of other food compounds that are more energy/calorie dense.”
And what about the taste?
Unlike the conventional greens powder, I found the peppermint flavor of the Ormus Supergreens to be very tasty — you don't have to disguise or mask the flavor.
I am excited that SunWarrior protein has been able to create such a pure form of protein and a delicious super greens powder. Despite the Classic protein blend’s incomplete amino acid profile, I prefer the taste of this variation and will continue to consume this product because of its purity and because it diversifies my dietary choices for protein — I can reach my daily protein requirements in a variety of ways outside of meat products. For instance, I use protein powder in smoothies, oatmeal, yogurt, and cottage cheese. The Ormus Supergreens is an excellent way for me to incorporate veggies in my diet, especially if I’m on the go because it comes in a easily blended powder form.
